The political scientist Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. mult. Hans-Dieter Klingemann of Freie Universität Berlin is the recipient of one of the most prestigious Canadian awards for research in social science and the humanities. The Canada Council for the Arts is presenting him with the John G. Diefenbaker Award, valued at 75,000 Canadian dollars. The award includes a year of research and teaching at Simon Fraser University for the academic year 2008/2009.

Klingemann was selected for this award on the basis of his outstanding research achievements, his experience with research collaboration, and his commitment to political science on the international level. In addition to his position at Freie Universität Berlin, Klingemann was also head of the Department of Institutions and Social Change of the Social Science Research Center Berlin from 1989 to 2003. In Canada he will pursue research on political representation as well as the relationship between cultural diversity and political identity.
