Freie Universität Berlin gathers crucial information for purposes of quality management in the field of studying and teaching through regular surveys of students and graduates. The goal of these activities is to utilize the results of evaluation within the scope of a dialogue that encompasses all levels of the university to achieve sustained improvements in processes and offerings related to teaching and studying.

The rules on evaluations (Evaluationsordnung) at Freie Universität Berlin provide for the following three central evaluations starting in 2012, each of them performed at four-year intervals:

  • Survey of students in bachelor’s degree programs
  • Survey of students in consecutive master’s degree programs
  • Survey of students who have withdrawn or otherwise disenrolled

Surveys of graduates of Freie Universität as part of the KOAB cooperation project of INCHER Kassel are currently being performed annually.

The body responsible for performing the central evaluations is the Arbeitsstelle Lehr- und Studienqualität, under the academic leadership of Dr. Rainer Watermann, Professor.

The documentation of the process of performing central evaluations within the context of process-oriented quality management at Freie Universität Berlin provides for extensive consideration of the evaluation results by study programs and departments/central institutes. To this end, the Arbeitsstelle Lehr- und Studienqualität provides not only university-wide overall reports, but also decentralized evaluation results in aggregated study program and department/central institute reports. The reports are published in German: Zentrale Evaluationen durchführen.
