South Korean professor Pilwha Chang is the new Dahlem International Network Professor for Gender Studies in the winter semester of 2016/17.

Pilwha Chang is a professor at Ewha Womans University in Seoul, where she has held the very first chair for gender studies in East Asia since it was established in 1984. She is one of the most prestigious professors in her field and has played a definitive role in the establishment and development of gender and women’s studies in Asia as founder of the Asian Association of Women’s Studies and director of the Korean Women’s Institute and the Asian Center for Women’s Studies, to name just a few examples.

Following her undergraduate degree in English Literature in Seoul, Pilwha Chang completed a PhD on “Women and Development” at the University of Sussex, where she was later invited to the post of Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies. Her research interests include public policy, labor and development from gender perspectives.

At Freie Universität, Pilwha Chang’s research will focus on sustainability with gender perspectives, working together with the Institute of Korean Studies, the Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS) and the Margherita von Brentano Center. During her stay she will hold a lecture and tutorial on Gender Studies in Asia and give a public evening lecture on her research.

The public lecture of the Dahlem International Network Professorship for Gender Studies 2016 – 17 will take place on January 24, 2017, 6 pm.
