A spin-off of the annual THE World University Rankings, the reputation ranking, according to THE, is based on the world’s largest invitation-only academic opinion survey.

The five German universities to appear in the reputation ranking are Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (place 44), Technische Universität München (group 61-70), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin and Universität Heidelberg (both group 71-80), and Freie Universität Berlin.

In recent research rankings, Freie Universität also took positions among the top 100 universities. In the THE World University Ranking from October 2012, Freie Universität placed among the world's best universities in the humanities. Reaching place 25 worldwide, it was the best among German universities in the humanities subjects.
