Wuhan University has its origin in the Ziqiang Institute, which was established in 1893 by Zhang Zhidong. Over the years, the university’s name changed several times until it was named Wuhan University in 1949. In 2000 it merged together with Wuhan University of Hydraulic and Electric Engineering, Wuhan Technical University of Surveying and Mapping and Hubei Medical University.

Today Wuhan University is member of both, Project 211 and Project 985, and it ranked 7th among the Chinese Universities in 2012. This university offers 114 bachelor, 317 master, 284 PhD and 32 post-doc programs and stands out in the fields of Physics, Biology, Environmental Technology, Hydrology, Computer Science, Law, Social Sciences and Philosophy.

The campus of Wuhan University is one of the most beautiful in China, located at the bottom of the Luojia mountain and at the famous East Lake, one of the biggest lakes of the country. This green-flooded campus is especially fascinating during cherry blossom season in March, which causes a huge rush of vistors each year. Aside from its beautiful flora, it is also the traditional Chinese-style houses which contribute to the landwide reputation of Wuhan campus.

Since 2009, Wuhan University and Freie Universität Berlin have maintained a partnership.
