Promotion of Young Academics at the Center for Area Studies (CAS)

Young academics are comprehensively trained through the cooperation of the focus area between the participating departments. CAS aims to connect regional expertise, profound language skills and theoretical as well as methodological skills in the single regional courses of study. Structured PhD programs offer diverse perspectives because of the intensive assistance and the possibility to collaborate in interdisciplinary networks.

Study

Freie Universität Berlin offers an enormous wealth of disciplines and accordingly a high numbers of researchers, who deal with the most distinct regions of the world as well with the different eras of humanity. Therefore the scientific expertise is extensive. From the beginning, students get insights into the current status of area studies and profit from the diverse activities, offered by the CAS. The educational offers encompass Bachelor- and Master Programs.

Doing a PhD

At Freie Universität, students may choose from several structured PhD programs with an emphasis on Area Studies. They include: Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies (BGSMCS), Graduate School of North American Studies (GSNAS), Graduate School of East Asian Studies (GEAS) and International Research Training Group ‘Between Spaces’, which have been awarded by the excellence initiative. The Friedrich Schlegel Graduate School, which has also been awarded by the excellence initiative, also puts an emphasis on world literatures. The PhD programs are imbedded in the structure of the Dahlem Research School with training programs and additional courses on offer. These include the intermediation of Transferable Skills, the areas of knowledge intermediation, knowledge management and language skills. The programs offer the PhD student of Area Studies not only the intermediation of substantiated special knowledge based on current research, but also a special assistance and intensive supervision.
