By establishing Dahlem Research School (DRS), Freie Universität Berlin broke new ground in doctoral education in Germany.  As a center for young researchers doctoral training in the structured doctoral programs of Dahlem Research School fosters interdisciplinary research  in a developing international context. 

Doctoral candidates of Dahlem Research School member programs gain access to additional funding opportunities, an interdisciplinary course program including transferable skills applicable to a range of future careers in research and beyond, as well as support in strategic career planning. The Welcome Center provides services especially for international young researchers and hosts Orientation Weeks for recently admitted doctoral candidates.
