Special Counselling Event for Egyptian PhD Candidates
On 16 June 300 Egyptian doctoral candidates visited the special counselling event “Get your PhD in Germany” which was organized by the DWZ. DAAD and the four universities represented at DWZ (Freie Universität Berlin, Philipps-Universität Marburg, Technische Universität Berlin and Technische Universität München) presented scholarship opportunities and dozens of vacant PhD positions. In addition, professors from Germany offered special counselling to Egyptian PhD-candidates and presented different structured doctoral programmes.
“We are pleased to welcome such a large number of PhD candidates and that we succeed to bring all four universities of DWZ together in this event for introducing their PhD programmes”, mentioned Dr. Michael Harms, Director of the DWZ and DAAD.
Mona Ayoub, DAAD Deputy Director, started with a presentation of the GERLS and GERSS programme and valued the cooperation with the Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education. Representatives of the four universities then introduced the research focuses and the features of their PhD programmes. Prof. Schäfer and Prof. Tröger gave a lecture on “TU Berlin Campus El Gouna: Current Research Activities in Urban Development and Water Engineering”. Prof. Nautz from FU Berlin talked about “Economics: State Forward Guidance” and Prof. Amasheh also from FU Berlin about “Vetmed and Biomedical Science: Analysis of Transport and Barrier Function in Epithelia”. In another lecture Dr. Andrae from FU Berlin presented his research on “Molecular Science” and Dr. Rahimi-Iman from Marburg University on "Lasers, Terahertz and more".
During these lectures representatives of the universities counselled for instance in terms of how to find and contact a supervisor and application procedure for scholarships. “In order to find a supervisor for your PhD and to get a scholarship you have to fulfil some requirements like a completed Master degree, belonging to the best 20% of your class and being fluent in English. And it’s essential for finding a supervisor to have a concrete research idea or proposal”, explained Dr. Florian Kohstall, DWZ Deputy Director and FU Berlin Liaison Officer. For the first time the DWZ published a list of PhD vacancies at the universities represented at DWZ on its website.
