Information Session about the Welcome@FUBerlin Program on April 20, 2017

Freie Universität Offers Various Special Opportunities for Refugees Wishing to Study

№ 083/2017 from Apr 18, 2017

There will be an information session on April 20, 2017, at 4 p.m., where the organizers of the Welcome@FUBerlin program will present various features of this academic program for refugees. In English, they will describe the advisory services, prerequisites for admission, and the German courses. In addition, they will provide details about the new possibilities for child care and the guest student status. To make it easier for mothers and fathers to participate in the Welcome@FUBerlin program, Freie Universität is offering limited child care for those taking German language classes. During the 2017 spring/summer semester, refugees will be able to attend selected courses at the university free of charge. If they have sufficient language skills, they may earn credits for these courses, which could later be recognized in a degree program, if applicable to the subject. The information session is public, and admission is free. No advance registration is needed. Following the session, there will be an opportunity for members of the press to speak with the organizers and some participants in the program.

Refugees interested in studying at the university can sign up for German language classes and preparatory courses at Freie Universität from now until May 31, 2017. The offerings are part of the Welcome@FUBerlin program open to individuals registered as refugees and who have a university entrance qualification from their home country. Registration for the language classes and preparatory courses is possible via an online form or at the Welcome Center of Freie Universität. The language prerequisite is German at the A2 level for the language classes and B1 for the preparatory courses offered by the Studienkolleg. The classes will start at the beginning of September.

The Welcome@FUBerlin program also offers refugees help from a student partner – a buddy –, language tandems for mutual language learning, free computer courses, and participation in courses offered by the University Sports Center. Currently more than 200 individuals are enrolled in the preparatory courses at Freie Universität. The Welcome@FUBerlin program was launched by Freie Universität in 2015. It aims to enable refugees in Berlin and Brandenburg to continue studies they began in their home countries or to start a degree program in Germany. The program is supported by the German Academic Exchange Service and the Berlin Senate Administration for Science and Research.
