DAAD: Freie Universität Again Most Popular Location in Germany for Students in ERASMUS Exchange Program

№ 233/2015 from Jul 22, 2015

According to calculations by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Freie Universität Berlin is again the most popular location in Germany for students participating in the European exchange program, ERASMUS. Figures published recently by the DAAD in "Wissenschaft weltoffen" indicate that during the 2013/14 academic year, Freie Universität attracted the most ERASMUS students to a German university (1034). During the same year, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin was in second place with 927 students, Technische Universität München (TU Munich) in third place with 701 students, and Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich) in fourth place with 582 students. "Wissenschaft weltoffen" is a reference work for international mobility of students and researchers. In it the DAAD analyzes the role of Germany in international academic exchange. The publication was presented in Berlin on Wednesday.

Freie Universität was also well above average in the total proportion of international students it attracted. The proportion was reportedly one fifth, significantly higher than the national average for all German universities (11.5 percent). The share of international students at Freie Universität who completed their secondary schooling outside the German school system (Bildungsausländer) amounted to 17 percent, more than twice as high as that for German universities on average (8.4 percent). The ratio among doctoral students at Freie Universität was just under 30 percent, significantly higher than the proportion nationwide (21.7 percent). For statistical purposes, a distinction is made between international students who completed their secondary schooling at a German school (Bildungsinländer) and those who completed their secondary schooling in another school system (Bildungsausländer).

"Wissenschaft Weltoffen" is published in cooperation between the German Academic Exchange Service and the German Centre for Higher Education and Science Research (DZHW) with financial support from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research and the German Federal Foreign Office.
