In the latest ranking by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, Freie Universität is one of the 60 most highly regarded universities in the world. As announced by THE in London, Freie Universität's reputation improved markedly during the past year, bringing the university up to group 51–60. It is now ranked as one of the four most prestigious universities in Germany and 18th in Europe. The THE World Reputation Ranking is an offshoot of the annually published THE World University Rankings and according to the journal, is based on the world's largest survey of selected academics.
The six German universities among the top 100 in the THE Reputation Ranking are, in addition to Freie Universität, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU Munich, rank 35), the University of Heidelberg (rank 38), Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (rank 41), Technische Universität München (TU Munich, group 61–70), and RWTH Aachen (group 91–100). The first three positions in the THE Reputation Ranking are held by Harvard University (USA), the University of Cambridge (UK), and the University of Oxford (UK).
