The second 2013 term of the International Summer and Winter University, FUBiS, started on Sunday at Freie Universität Berlin. There are 112 students from 17 countries. During the six-week term, the students take German classes as well as other subjects. Most of the students are from the United States, France, and Canada. The term will end July 6.

The students can select which classes they wish to attend. Classes are taught in English on, for example, the recent history of Berlin, social policy in Germany, and German literature. For all the courses the students can earn internationally recognized credits. The academic program on the campus of Freie Universität is supplemented with field trips. A boat trip on the Spree River and guided tours along the former Berlin Wall and the Reichstag are integrated in the courses. In addition, the participants can take day and weekend trips to Dresden, Weimar, and Hamburg.

The Summer University was initiated in 1998 and was supplemented by the winter term in 2007. In 2010 FUBiS was recognized by the Forum on Education Abroad for its academic quality. In 2012 the program attracted about 500 students to Freie Universität.
