Remembering Latin America Scholar Friedrich Katz

Conference in Commemoration of Expert on Mexico, Friedrich Katz, to Be Held at Freie Universität Berlin

A conference in commemoration of the historian and scholar of Latin American history, Friedrich Katz, will be held on December 12, 2011, at the Latin America Institute, Freie Universität Berlin. The conference will focus on his life and work. Speakers are expected from the United States, Mexico, Switzerland, and Germany. Friedrich Katz was emeritus professor of history at the University of Chicago, and in 2002 he received an honorary doctorate from Freie Universität. He passed away in October 2010 at the age of 83. The conference is public, and admission is free.

As a historian and expert on Mexico, Friedrich Katz was an important figure for the Latin America Institute at Freie Universität. He was also an advocate who contributed greatly to the continued existence of the institute as a location for interdisciplinary Latin American studies.
