New Network for Climate Protection in Cities

Initial Meeting at Freie Universität Berlin

№ 309/2011 from Oct 07, 2011

At a conference in Berlin scientists from Freie Universität Berlin and the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam took the first steps in creating a network for research on climate protection in urban areas. Special emphasis will be placed on curbing the impact of climate change for cities. The network will deal with the urban energy supply, low-emission urban planning and architecture, and energy-efficient infrastructure and transport systems. The effects of climate change on public health and the role of policy making in steering climate change will also be addressed.

The new network is composed of scientists from the Environmental Policy Research Centre (FFU, Freie Universität Berlin), IASS, and other institutions. The opening conference "Cities and Climate Change" was held from October 5 to 7 and was attended by 80 leading scientists from many countries. It was sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.
