In the latest ranking by the Times Higher Education (THE) magazine, Freie Universität is one of the 70 most highly regarded universities in the world. As announced by THE in London, Freie Universität's reputation places the university in group 61–70 (last year: group 71-80). Along with Technische Universität München (TU Munich), which was ranked in the same group, Freie Universität is one of the five universities in Germany with the best international reputation.

The THE World Reputation Ranking is an offshoot of the annually published THE World University Rankings and according to the journal, is based on the world's largest survey of selected academics.

Also, according to the prestigious QS World University Ranking, which is published annually, Freie Universität is one of the six best universities in Germany. Ranked 125 worldwide, the university was also able to maintain its strong position internationally (2016/2017: rank 123), as announced by Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. in London. Since the last QS ranking, the university again showed improvement in the reputation of its graduates among employers as well as in its academic reputation, which was already very high.

Six indicators were evaluated: the academic reputation of the institution, the number of citations by researchers, the ratio between students and faculty, the reputation of graduates among employers, and the international composition of faculty and students.
