In this course we will continue our discussion of critical literary theory and current work in progress. We will focus on the relations of literary aesthetics and history, New Historicism, literary postmodernism and historiographic metafiction, modes of mimesis, textuality and materiality, theories of narrative and the novel, "Border Literary Histories" and the "Glocal".
The authors to be considered will include Theodor Adorno, Mikhail Bakhtin, Bill Brown, Christine Gallagher, Gérard Genette, Stephen Greenblatt, Linda Hutcheon, Heinz Ickstadt, Wolfgang Iser, Barbara Johnson, George Levine, and José Limón.

This seminar will involve an intensive examination of contemporary colonial political writing from the 1680s through the mid-1760s. Each of the thirteen sessions [or, if the first section is just introductory, twelve] will consider one of the principal examples of this extensive but under-analyzed literature.
