Digital Assistance for Refugees

Two new digital offerings facilitate arrival and settling in Germany

News from Jan 26, 2016

The German Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF), the Goethe-Institut, the German Federal Employment Agency (BA), and the public service broadcaster Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR) have developed a new app for refugees. The service and learning app "Ankommen" makes important information available for the newcomers: information about the asylum procedure, about schools, education, and work, as well as information about values and life in Germany. The free app includes a multimedia German course and is currently available in Arabic, English, Farsi, French, and German. After it is downloaded, it can be used without Internet access. It is available for smart phones with the Android operating system and iOS.

A new website initiated by the public broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR) offers a mixture of information and entertainment that may be of interest for refugees and other interested parties: www.WDRforyou.de. The website is in German, English, Arabic, and Farsi. It has four categories: News & Documentaries, Information about Germany, Sports & Entertainment, and Kids. Some refugees are also involved in producing the website. They include the Iranian graphic artist Ali Chakav and successful Syrian publicists such as Monis Bukhari.
