At a Glance

The Institute of Classical Archaeology has existed ever since Freie Universität Berlin was founded in the 1948/49 winter semester.

Classical archaeology is the study of the material evidence of Greek, Etruscan, and Roman cultures. The geographical context consists primarily of Greece, Asia Minor, and Italy, as well as the entire area of the Mediterranean, and at times, other parts of the Near East and Europe.

In Greece the time frame covers the Minoan and Mycenaean culture of the Bronze Age (3rd-2nd millennium BC.), the world of Greek and Italian city-states, and the Hellenistic monarchies and commonwealths as well as the Roman Empire to Late Antiquity (4th- 5th century AD).
