SoSe 23: Empire of Gas and Oil. The Global History of (Post-)Soviet Energy

During the 1970s, the Soviet Union became a global player in the international trade with gas and oil. Pipelines and transport hubs were built, connecting newly explored fields in Siberia with Eastern and Western Europe. For the Soviet leadership, gas and oil became a major source of income in western currency and an important means of political influence. After the collapse of the USSR in 1991, energy became even more important for the dwindling Russian economy and the Russian state.
The seminar will take a close look at these developments. The first part of the course will be devoted to basic readings on the political economy of (post-)soviet energy. In the second part, students are expected to develop group presentations on specific case studies.
