Kommentar
This seminar introduces students to the sociology of art, from classical theoretical perspectives to recent empirical research. Referring to “art” in this seminar comprises a variety of meanings, including artworks and artists, the production and consumption of art, its role and function in societies, its relations to other social fields, art markets and institutions, and its political implications. The main focus of the seminar will be on Western and contemporary issues and understandings of the nexus between art and society. The seminar is roughly structured into five parts: In the first part, we will discuss key sociological theories of art. In the second part, the class will focus on the production of art and questions related to characteristics and networks of artists, artistic practices, and technologies. The third part will emphasize the role of art institutions, organizations, and markets while the fourth part will emphasize the consumptions and reception art, for instance in terms of aesthetic experience and the social stratification of artistic consumption. In a fifth part, the seminar will look into the manifold relations between art and politics.
