The Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+ sets out to advance mathematics itself and its interdisciplinary power with the aim of achieving progress on grand challenges in a wide variety of application fields.
MATH+ will start with nine major units for project-oriented research: four Application Areas and five Emerging Fields. In both, mathematicians from a wide range of different disciplines collaborate – with each other and with leading researchers from diverse application fields as well as representatives from industry. The offered position is part of the research project “Spreading of copper technology in ancient times” of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+ at FU in cooperation with the research network TOPOI (https://www.topoi.org/) and the Zuse-Institute Berlin. The main goal of this project is development of data-based mathematical modeling approaches for studying the spreading of the copper technology in the ancient world across multiple spatio-temporal scales. The main methodologies will combine novel ideas from agent-based modeling and adaptive diffusion dynamics coupled with network-based models of spreading processes. In addition to the construction of an agent-based model for the spreading of copper technologies, efficient simulation techniques and methods for analyzing dynamical properties of the spreading process will be developed.
Diploma or Master of Science in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or related disciplines.
- Experience in theory and/or method development in one or more of the following areas: probability theory, numerical analysis, network dynamics
- Additional knowledge from the following fields is advantageous: agent-based modeling, computer simulations, uncertainty quantification, data analysis (techniques from machine-learning that permit to handle complex data-sets)
- Experience and good programming skills used in scientific computing (Matlab, Python)
- Excellent written and oral English
