The Berlin Mathematics Research Center MATH+ sets out to advance mathematics itself and its interdisciplinary power with the aim of achieving progress on grand challenges in a wide variety of application fields.
MATH+ will start with nine major units for project-oriented research: four Application Areas and five Emerging Fields. In both, mathematicians from a wide range of different disciplines collaborate – with each other and with leading researchers from diverse application fields as well as representatives from industry. The offered position is part of the research project “The spatio-temporal modelling of mechanisms underlying pain relief via the µ-opioid receptor” of the Cluster of Excellence MATH+ at FU and Zuse-Institute Berlin (ZIB) in cooperation with Berlin’s university hospital Charité and the Max Delbrück Center for Molecular Medicine in the Helmholtz Association (MDC). The main goal of this project is development of a spatio-temporal data-based mathematical model of cellular signaling pathways activated by µ-opioid receptors as well as the development of associated simulation techniques. The successful candidate will be part of a larger research team; their main tasks will be the construction of a hybrid model that integrates particle-based reaction-diffusion models with reaction-diffusion PDE models or related master equations. Efficient simulation techniques and methods for integrating experimental data and analyzing dynamical properties of the signaling processes will be developed in parallel.
Diploma or Master of Science in Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science or related disciplines.
- Experience in theory and/or method development in one or more of the following areas: stochastic processes, particle methods, numerical analysis, reaction-diffusion models
- Additional knowledge from the following fields is advantageous: stochastic models for cellular processes, molecular dynamics, systems biology
- Experience and good programming skills used in scientific computing (Matlab, Python)
- Excellent written and oral English
