The professor will assume responsibilities in research and teaching in the field of Islamic Studies with an emphasis on modern history and the present. The professorship constitutes a marked contribution to Freie Universität’s wealth of knowledge in area studies.


Appointment requirements are governed by Article 100 of the Berlin Higher Education Act (Berliner Hochschulgesetz).


The successful candidate shouldhave a research and teaching record in the field of modern and current developments in the history, culture, and religion of the Arab world. The record should also include evidence of applying approaches drawn from history, cultural studies and/or social sciences. Furthermore, the appointee should have spent time studying and/or conducting research in Arab countries and/or other countries in the Islamic world. Ideally, the candidate would also have a second regional focus in their research. They should also be able to demonstrate excellent research work through peer-reviewed publications. The successful candidate should have international teaching experience at the university level and be able to teach in English. They should be highly proficient in one of the languages from the region they study, and knowledge of a second language would be a plus. They should also have experience in acquiring and leading externally funded research projects.


Along with the regular official duties of professors listed in Article 99 of the Berlin Higher Education Act, we expect the appointee to engage in the following activities:


The professor will be expected to contribute to collaborative research endeavors with Freie Universität’s partners, particularly in collaboration with the Berlin Graduate School Muslim Cultures and Societies. In addition, the appointee should contribute to the development of the existing bachelor’s and master’s degree programs (including course offerings in English). They should also help develop interdisciplinary research contexts, including international cooperation as well as public outreach in non-university contexts, especially with respect to the press and other media outlets. By the time the appointee is up for tenure review, they should be able to provide proof of their ability to teach courses in German.


The position entails a five-year appointment as a civil servant for a fixed period (“Beamter/Beamtin auf Zeit”). The fixed-term appointment is tied to the agreement that if the appointee successfully passes the tenure review, they will be appointed to a permanent professorship. The permanent appointment will not be advertised as a separate position. As part of this process, performance goals will be negotiated when the fixed-term professor is hired. The fulfillment of those goals will be assessed as part of the tenure evaluation (Article 102 c of the Berlin Higher Education Act, § 102 c BerlHG).


The performance goals will basically deal with the following areas:


  • Research
  • Teaching
  • Promoting early-career researchers
  • Academic committee work
  • Leadership and management
  • Mastery of language


At the time of appointment to the permanent professorship, all the general regulations and conditions regarding public sector employment must be fulfilled.


In addition, any candidates who completed their doctoral degree at Freie Universität Berlin and/or have Freie Universität Berlin as their primary employer must comply with the regulations stipulated by the Berlin Higher Education Act, Article102 c, paragraph 3 in conjunction with paragraph 7.
