Expanding Horizons: Language Courses and International Friendships

Enrolling in a German language course was another pivotal moment in my journey. The language classes were not just about learning German—they were also about meeting people from diverse backgrounds. My classmates came from countries like Ukraine, Syria, Turkey, Italy, Iran, and other countries. This diversity enriched my experience, allowing me to make friends from around the world and gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and perspectives.
These international friendships have been some of the most rewarding connections I've made. We bonded over our shared experiences as newcomers and helped each other navigate the challenges of living in a new country. Many of these friendships have lasted, and they continue to be a source of support and joy.
Social Engagement: Staying Active and Involved
Staying socially active was key to my integration. Back in Afghanistan, I was involved in peace-building efforts and youth and women empowerment projects. This background naturally led me to seek out similar opportunities in Germany. I participated in various social events and projects organised by local organisations, where people gathered to meet new friends, have fun, and engage in meaningful conversations.
In addition to these activities, I, along with a group of friends, initiated mini-projects in different cities across Germany. We organised events focused on Afghanistan, sharing our country's situation with others and fostering dialogue. These projects not only helped us connect with people in different parts of Germany but also allowed us to continue our work from home in a new context.
Sprachcafés: Practicing Language and Building Connections
Another valuable resource was the Sprachcafés, or speaking cafes, where I practiced my German and met people interested in language exchange. These informal settings were perfect for improving my fluency while learning about others' stories and perspectives. It was a reminder that even in a new country with a different language, it is still possible to build meaningful connections.
Advice for Newcomers: Finding Your Place
For anyone starting their journey in a new country, my advice is simple: stay active and be open to new experiences. It's natural to feel hesitant at first, especially when faced with language barriers and cultural differences. However, opportunities to connect with others are everywhere—you just need to be willing to seek them out.
Don't worry if you're an introvert or if you're unsure where to start. Every community has a place for different personalities, and you will find people who resonate with you. It's important to remain patient and persistent. If you are genuine and interested in others, you will eventually find the right people who fit your personality and help you feel at home.
