During the Opening Day we will discuss the social and political role of Higher Education Institutions for a sustainability transformation.

Spring Campus Conference 2020’s Opening Day awaits you with a varied and exciting program. After a Welcome Note by the President of the Freie Universität Berlin and Key Note Speeches by leading experts on the German and European sustainability agenda. Prof. Verena Blechinger-Talcott, Vice-President of FU Berlin will moderate the Panel Discussion “Is it Time to Implement Strong Sustainability Commitments in Higher Education?”.

 

The discussion is initiated by a contribution by Reinhold Leinfelder, who is Professor at the Institute of Geological Sciences at FU Berlin and a representative of the Scientists for Future movement, that supports the Fridays for Future activists with robust scientific evidence.

Further Speakers are Dr. habil. Fritz A. Reusswig, from the renowned Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research, Prof. Heike Walk, Eberswalde University of Sustainable Development, Prof. Sandy Tudhope, University Lead on Climate Responsibility and Sustainability, University of Edinburgh and Prof. Xue Ling, from our UAS partner Peking University.

The panel discussion will offer various perspectives on the following questions:

- How does the current discourse impact the societal and political role of universities?

- How do universities as public institutions respond to calls for action from their community and stakeholders?

- How do universities shape their governance structures in light of new participatory demands?

- Is science living up to the challenges posed by climate change or is it staying in its comfort zone?
