A lasting partnership between Profund Innovation and the technology transfer office of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin, the joint medical faculty of Freie Universität Berlin and Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, was initiated in 2009. The cooperative relationship helps prevent duplication of structures and make more efficient use of resources. On the one hand, Profund Innovation advises teams of business founders from Charité, provides advice and support for their funding applications, offers training and qualification measures, and provides networks and office space. On the other, spinoffs from Freie Universität Berlin benefit from the expertise of Charité’s founder scout, who specializes in life sciences, and can get in touch with experts in other fields as well, such as clinical trials.
The cooperative initiative is visibly bearing fruit. Startups such as Scopis GmbH and Humedics GmbH, that have received support through the partnership, have found investors and developed into rising medical technology companies. Many other teams, plenty of them with members from various disciplines, have started down the path to founding a business with support from profund and now enrich the healthcare sector cluster in Berlin.
Together, Freie Universität and Charité pursue the strategy of the “Entrepreneurial Network University,” which won grant funding from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy in the “EXIST Culture of Entrepreneurship – Entrepreneur University” competition in 2013. Implementation of this strategy is being co-financed with funds from the German federal government until 2018.
