A comprehensive gender equality and diversity politics is a central aspect of social sustainability. Goals related to gender equality have been core to the self-image of Freie Universität for more than 30 years. Most importantly, this includes the equality of women and men, the promotion of internationally recognized gender research and its integration in teaching, aiming for family-friendly conditions for all members of the university, and an increased awareness of gender equality and diversity.

The qualification and promotion of employees through personnel development and healthy management are also important. Freie Universität Berlin started its occupational health management in 2005 with the FUndament Gesundheit project and, in 2015, set up the Unit and Steering Committee for Professional Development within the HR Department. Important goals include attracting and hiring new employees, strengthening employee health, job satisfaction, motivation, and helping to further develop and secure internal working knowledge from a lifelong learning perspective.
