Freie Universität Berlin is an active member of the International Sustainable Campus Network (ISCN). On the occasion of the World Economic Forum, the ISCN in collaboration with the Global University Leaders Forum (GULF) shared exemplary campus sustainability case studies provided by 42 of the world’s leading universities all focused on sustainable development. Higher education institutions serve as a catalyst for change and the collection of case studies by members of the ISCN and GULF reflect the sophistication of sustainability in higher education institutions and their purposeful contributions to the SDGs to enhance the surrounding community, higher education sector, and world.
In our contribution (starting on page 68) we focus on the implementation of the SDGs in teaching, research, and management. A current evaluation shows, that about 25 % of FUB’s research projects are related to the SDGs. Additionally, 14 % of the over 4000 courses offered per semester focus on sustainability issues, which FUB intends to further increase. In doing so we aim to impart social and communication competences as they relate to the Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) teaching and learning concept, which places great value on interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary teaching. To that end, the contribution in the ISCN Report features two measures which set a spotlight on the 17 SDGs of the United Nations – a transdisciplinary lecture series as well as a new skill area “Sustainable Development” in the field of the General Professional Skills courses.
