Since 2003, Freie Universität’s technical department has carried out annual so-called energy efficiency programmes, university buildings and facilities are modified and optimized in terms of energy efficiency within the framework of this undertaking. In the meantime, the majority of university buildings have been modernized in terms of their technology – key aspects of this were the heating and ventilation equipment.
The implementation of these measures – together with the energy saver incentive scheme and energy monitoring – has reduced heating requirements in the buildings by around 30 %. Some buildings even achieved reductions of 50 to 70 %. The reductions were particularly high where targeted weaknesses in the external building shell were rectified, where windows were replaced, or roof insulation improved.
In-depth information about the energy efficiency programme at the Free University of Berlin can be found in the energy efficiency programme presentation (only available in German).
