The Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University is one of the oldest institutes of higher education in Russia. It was founded on November 17, 1804, by Alexander the First. It is situated in the center of Kazan and for a long time it was the most eastern university of Russia. Nowadays it consists of 14 schools, 4 institutes, and 2 subsidiaries with 16,000 students majoring in 44 different subjects and 600 candidates studying for their PhDs.
The Federal University of Kazan was founded in 2009 on the base of Kazan State University. Nowadays there is a cooperation and student exchange agreement (information in German) between the Federal University of Kazan and Freie Universität Berlin.
