Research Abroad

Various organizations support the international exchange of scholars and scientists through academic and cultural exchange programs.

The list of programs below is intended as an initial overview of some of the programs offered. The prerequisites, funding details, and application deadlines are subject to change at any time, so prospective candidates need to contact the sponsor directly.

Worldwide Fellowship for Research Abroad; open to all disciplines

Funding organization DFG
Term up to 24 months
Scope of aid provided basic amount of scholarship plus monthly lump sum to cover travel expenses and costs for material. Where applicable: allowance for costs of living abroad (Auslandszuschlag), allowance for costs of publications, allowance for travel expenses, children bonus, support of educational costs
Prerequisites
  • “Junior scholars and scientists” who have completed doctoral studies are eligible to apply
  • Applicants must be integrated into the German academic system (at least 3 years)

Fellowship for Research Abroad, hosted by alumni of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation; worldwide; open to all disciplines

Funding Organization Alexander von Humboldt Stiftung
Term 6 – 24 months for postdocs (up to 4 years after completing the doctorate) or 6 – 18 months for experienced researchers (4 – 12 years after completing the doctorate)
Scope of aid provided Fellowship to cover living expenses; monthly payment of € 250 for costs of materials; host institution participation is expected (1/3 of total fellowship amount, but many countries are exempt from this rule)
Prerequisites
  • Doctorate was earned a maximum of 4 (postdoc) or 12 (experienced researchers) years ago
  • Hosted by an AvH alumnus
  • German citizenship or Germany as center of candidate’s work and life since at least five years
Application deadline Ongoing; selection meetings in February, June, and October; processing time: 6 months minimum

Worldwide Fellowship for Research Abroad; open to all disciplines

Term 3 - 6 months
Scope of aid provided Fellowship to cover living expenses; monthly payment of € 250 for costs of materials
Prerequisites
  • Doctorate earned with excellent grades (“sehr gut” on the German scale) not more than 4 years before; initial scholarly or scientific publications
  • No funding provided at the location where the doctorate is earned; no further funding application possible if already active abroad as postdoc
Application Short-term fellowships (6 months max.): in November, March, and June

Fellowship for research abroad in a non-European country with one-year phase for returning to Europe; open to all disciplines

Funding Organization EU, Research Frameworks Programme Horizon 2020
Term 12 – 36 months, 12 months of which are designated for the return phase
Scope of aid provided Candidate’s own position, lump-sum payment for mobility, travel and research funding
Prerequisites
  • "Experienced researcher": doctorate or four years of research experience
  • Mobility rule: researchers must not have been active in the target country for longer than 12 months over the past three years (does not apply to the return phase)
  • Applicant must be a citizen of an EU Member State or Associated Country or have been integrated into the European academic system for at least five years.

Fellowship for Research Abroad in an EU Member State or Associated Country; open to all disciplines

Funding Organization EU, Research Framework Programme Horizon 2020
Term 12 – 24 months
Scope of aid provided Candidate’s own position, lump-sum payment for mobility, travel and research funding
Prerequisites
  • "Experienced researcher": doctorate or four years of research experience
  • Mobility rule: researchers must not have been active in the target country for longer than 12 months over the past three years.
  • Applicant must currently reside and work in an EU Member State or Associated Country.
Application deadline Call for applications issued in spring, application deadline in early autumn (~ September)
