As a project of the German Excellence Initiative, DRS has been evaluated regularly by panels of international experts.
DRS has been participating in the longitudinal study ProFile (2010-16) by the Institute for Research Information and Quality Assurance (iFQ) and the follow-up study Nacaps by the German Centre for Higher Education Research and Science Studies (DZHW), starting in February 2019. Doctoral researchers and doctorate holders throughout the country are surveyed at regular intervals on their study conditions, career aims and professional development, as well as on their general life situation. The aim of the study is to systematically collect this data for the first time for HEIs, policy makers and researchers. Its results feed back into the DRS quality asurance mechanisms and will provide data on key quality indicators of doctoral education, allowing comparisons between the experiences of doctoral candidates enrolled in member programs and those pursuing an individual doctorate at Freie Universität Berlin and between Freie Universität and over 50 other German universities.
The DRS is evaluated regularly by those making use of its services: the participants of the DRS qualification program continuously assess its quality. Regular feedback routines with doctoral programs and candidates help to identify deficits and develop improvements.
We currently conduct an impact study regarding our courses. On the basis of quantitative surveys and focus group discussions the results will help to further improve the course offer at Dahlem Research School.
