Studying with Children
If you are taking care of a young child or children, if you are caring for family members, or if you are working while studying, then you can request a leave of absence or change your official status to part-time student.
A leave of absence or switching to part-time status might influence things like BAföG payments or scholarships. The Social Counselling Center through the Studierendenwerk Berlin can provide you with advice and support.
Berlin’s daycare centers resumed normal operations on June 22, 2020, but many of them have not been able to return to their regular hours. Please contact your daycare center for detailed information about childcare options. You can also read more about the return to regular operations on the Berlin Senate website (in German).
Furthermore, you also have the option of requesting a leave of absence or changing your official status to part-time student. The Center for Academic Advising and Psychological Counseling at Freie Universität Berlin also provides counseling and support concerning your studies or if you are in a stressful situation.
Berlin schools are out of session for summer vacation from June 25 to August 7, 2020. Freie Universität’s Family Services has put together a list of different activities for the summer in German.
The Family Service office has set up a Wiki (http://wikis.fu-berlin.de/x/KoK2KQ) with information for students with children. The information provided there will be updated as needed. The Center for Academic Advising and Psychological Counseling at Freie Universität Berlin also provides counseling and support concerning your studies or if you are in a stressful situation https://www.fu-berlin.de/en/sites/studienberatung/index.html
