In November 2009 the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) established MyoGrad – the International Research Training Group for Myology. Partner institutions are the Free University Berlin and the Medical Faculty of the Charité in Berlin together with the University Pierre et Marie Curie in Paris (Paris VI).

Call for applications in 2014

The 2014 call for applications to MyoGrad is open from April 1-30, 2014. After the renewal evaluation on February 25./26. 2014, MyoGrad is recommended to the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft - DFG) for a second funding period from October 2014 to March 2019.

What is special about MyoGrad?

Students accepted by MyoGrad will conduct a bi-nationally supervised doctoral thesis (co-tutelle de thèse) within one of the 9 projects of the training group. They will enroll in both Berlin and Paris University (with tuition paid once) and do research work both in Berlin and in Paris labs. At this early stage of their career they will already be part of a very prestigious muscle science research community. After three years students are expected to defend their dissertation before a dissertation committee equally composed of German and French academic representatives. Successful students will obtain one doctoral degree by both universities.

What does the MyoGrad curriculum look like?

MyoGrad offers an English curriculum covering important aspects of muscle-related cell and molecular biology or clinical aspects of muscle diseases. In the course of the program MyoGrad students have also access to complementary training classes in transferable skills (writing scientific papers, grant application etc.) thus ensuring long-term scientific success. Teaching in Summer School settings, continuous communication between students and teachers in seminars and journal clubs face-to-face and online and a myology “E-learning” platform are the cornerstones of the educational concept.

Who can apply to MyoGrad?

MyoGrad seeks to attract excellent and highly motivated students who wish to obtain a PhD in the field of muscle-related cell and molecular biology and intend to embark on a scientific career. Applications from medical doctors with a keen interest in clinical and scientific aspects of muscle diseases are also welcome. In addition the program runs its own MD-PhD program to enroll future physician scientists.
