On Friday 13 July 2018, Freie Universität Berlin in cooperation with the British initiative Sense about Science will organize the panel discussion “Getting your voice heard on public policy: how early career researchers can engage with policymakers” in the framework of this year’s Euro Science Open Forum (ESOF) in Toulouse.
ESOF is the the biennial pan-European meeting dedicated to research and innovation. For one week in July, leading scientists, researchers, young researchers, business people, entrepreneurs and innovators, policy makers, science and technology communicators and the general public from all over Europe come together to discuss new discoveries and debate the direction that research is taking in the sciences, humanities and social sciences.
The panel, composed of members from the European Commission, Sense about Science and Freie Universität, will explore the support and preparation early career researchers (ECRs) get from research institutions to reach out to policymakers as well as the various types of institutions and people that ECRs should target and the routes into making contact with them.
It will also address the political considerations:
With short presentations by experts, plus Q&A and discussion, attendees will come away understanding how to effectively spread scientific knowledge among policy makers, to encourage evidenced-based policy and to use these insights as they develop their careers.
Sense about Science and Freie Universität Berlin have already cooperated several times in the organization of the workshop “Standing up for Science” for ECRs in Brussels, where the discussion focusses on EU policy making. The next workshop is expected to take place in October 2018.
