Helga Pedersen Moot Court Competition (EN)

Jun 16, 2022 | 03:00 PM - 04:00 PM

Zielgruppe: Studierende der FU Berlin

Organizer: Department of Law

This event introduces the Helga Pedersen Moot Court (HPMCC) to students specifically interested in International law and human rights protection.

The HPMCC is a prestigious moot court competition organized by the Council of Europe. Here, students simulate the appeal process on issues of human rights violations before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) in Strasbourg.

The competition is divided into three stages all throughout which the students can benefit from support and coaching provided by coaches and research staff at the chair of European and international law.

A hypothetical problem statement on a violation of the European Convention on Human Rights will be published in September 2022. A team of 2-4 students will draft two briefs in English as Applicant and Respondent. The teams then present their arguments to judges in regional rounds to be held in March 2023. Based on the scores achieved in the written submissions and the regional rounds, 18 best teams from across Europe will be selected to participate in the final oral round, which will be held at the Palace of Europe in Strasbourg. The winning team will be invited to participate in an internship at the ECtHR.

The event includes a short simulation of a HPMCC pleading.
