Innovative Networking Luncheon for Alexander von Humboldt Guests & Hosts
Prof. Richard Drayton gave a keynote speech about Humboldt and German universities

Taking advantage of the new possibilities for in-person meetings of larger groups, Freie Universität Berlin’s Division International Affairs invited all Humboldt Fellows at our university to a networking luncheon at the Henry-Ford-Building together with their hosts on 30 September. Forty followed the call and were warmly greeted by FUB’s Vice President, Prof. Dr. Marianne Braig, herself a seasoned Humboldt host.
Matthias Hergenhan, Program Coordinator of Frontiers of Research at the Humboldt Foundation’s Berlin Office, presented new developments at the Foundation and introduced various funding possibilities for Fellows and Hosts. The undisputed highlight of the event, however, was a keynote speech by Humboldt Awardee Professor Richard Drayton from King’s College, London, currently at FUB's Department of History and Cultural Studies, titled: "Die Gedanken sind frei: Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt and the German vision of the university". This was followed by a lively discussion, which continued during a protracted luncheon in the foyer.
The overwhelming success of this new format suggests its establishment as a fixed event every year.
