The National Library of Finland - known as the Helsinki University Library from 1919 to 2006 - is part of Helsingin Yliopisto / Helsingfors Universitet. It was designed by German architect Carl Ludvig Engel (1778–1840), who was responsible for most of the buildings around the capital's monumental centre. The older part of the building was completed in 1840. The newer extension building, the Rotunda book storage, was designed by architect Gustaf Nyström, completed in 1906. The dome is reminiscent of Roman baths, which were the architectural model on which the library was based, including colonnades and vaulted ceilings. The building was restored in the early 2010s, including the ornamentation of the ceiling.
