The research-teaching nexus: international perspectives on mentoring practice in undergraduate research

"This presentation will be situated in the international discussion on linking teaching and research (the research-teaching nexus). Professor Walkington will outline the benefits for both students and for their mentors when they engage in undergraduate research. Examples will be given to demonstrate the impact of student research and to show how it can be linked to the curriculum and co-curriculum. Furthermore our speaker will outline nine strategies for engaging students with research, before going on to explore what mentoring means in the context of undergraduate research and to explain the roles teachers can adopt if they supervise undergraduate research projects. The presentation will end with the presenter’s latest research findings on the practice of award-winning research mentors from around the world, to understand what excellent mentors do to create challenge, sustain engagement and celebrate success with their students."
