Fukushima Dai-ichi at 5, Chernobyl #4 at 30: Cultural, Geographical and Political Settings in Risk and Crisis Management
Cultural profiles play a crucial and often underestimated role in the practice of risk and crisis management. The lecture compares the different cultural, geographical and political settings that shaped the evolution of exclusion zones around the stricken Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant in 2011 and the number 4 plant at Chernobyl in 1986. Based on recent fieldwork inside both exclusion zones this talk will examine what lessons might be applied to the Fukushima zone after five years in light of Chernobyl’s 30th anniversary in 2016.
