The new millennium is characterized by increasing globalization and further scientific specialization. The growing complexity of exigencies faced by research requires ever stronger cooperation across the borders of research fields and countries.
With the workshops of Dahlem Konferenzen, Freie Universität provides a forum for highly qualified researchers to engage in an international and interdisciplinary dialogue to meet the scientific challenges of the future.
It is the aim of the Dahlem Workshops – initiated in 1974 –, to foster scientific creativity, the exchange of information and ideas between different fields, and the development of new theses on the basis of well-founded research. At the same time the workshops are designed to encourage researchers to conceive future research agendas. Traditionally the workshops of Dahlem Konferenzen take up topics from the areas of life sciences and Earth sciences. In addition, they also pursue questions in the fields of social sciences and the humanities.
Following previously formulated questions, the common work of the researchers is based on an assessment of the current state of the field and oriented toward the future. Based on 16 background papers prepared for the workshop, 40 scholars discuss the themes of the workshop with the goals of identifying gaps in research, finding possibilities for convergence in disputed issues, and influencing the direction of future research. The fruitfulness of the Dahlem Workshop model is made apparent not least by the fact that by now other institutions imitate it.
