Special Session of the United Nations Security Council on Nuclear Non-Proliferation

The Case of Iran. Berlin, 29 July 2010

On 17 May 2010, Iran agreed on an initiative by Brazil and Turkey to store about half of its low-enriched uranium in Turkey. Just one day later, the permanent Members of the United Nations Security Council announced a draft resolution aiming to impose a new set of sanctions on Iran stating that the deal violates previous Security Council resolutions which call for a complete end of Iran's enrichment activities. The Security Council finally adopted the resolution containing new sanctions on 9 June 2010 with a vote of 12 in favor, 2 against (Brazil, Turkey) and 1 abstention (Lebanon). Iran announced that it would not bow to such kind of pressure.

In light of the divided opinion in the Council and recent developments, the Security Council convened a Special Session on 29 July 2010 in Berlin.
