One of the office’s special foci is selecting doctoral candidates and postdoctoral researchers from China who are interested in studying or doing research at Freie Universität. They can be financed through a joint scholarship program with the China Scholarship Council (CSC).
Freie Universität Berlin’s Beijing Office perceives itself as a service facility. It serves as a focal point for Chinese students and scholars interested in study and research opportunities as well as chances for research collaboration at Freie Universität.
It also assists members of Freie Universität in planning and implementing projects, initiating cooperation, and in supporting the organization of events and workshops in China. The office promotes the exchange of scholars, recruits graduate students working toward a doctorate and postdoctoral researchers, helps develop new collaborations, and is involved in managing the university’s alumni network in China.
Freie Universität Berlin has been cooperating successfully with Chinese partners for 30 years. There are currently 10 cooperation agreements with universities, research institutes, and institutions in China.
The closest and longest-standing collaboration is between Freie Universität and Peking University, which led to the founding of the interdisciplinary "Zentrum für Deutschlandstudien" in 2005. In 2011 the two universities signed a Primary Partnership agreement aiming to enhance their collaboration and strengthen the profiles of both universities.
There are several activities in political sciences with Fudan University in Shanghai such as the joint Ph.D. program of the Graduate School for Global Politics and the Global Politics Summer School of Freie Universität, which has already been held for ten years.
At Nanjing University the Sino-German Nanjing Integrated Center for Earth Sciences (NICE) was set up in cooperation with Freie Universität in 2009. In 2012 Nanjing University and Freie Universität started a double-degree master's program in Environmental Earth Science. It is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Freie Universität and the China Scholarship Council (CSC) have been cooperating since 2008 for the purpose of providing high-quality research training to doctoral students from major Chinese universities. Each summer professors at Freie Universität who are interested in the program, can offer research fellowships to graduate students from China.
Since the agreement was initiated, about 200 graduate students have been awarded a CSC fellowship to do research at Freie Universität. The majority of them aim to complete their doctorate at Freie Universität. Through this program Freie Universität is one of the most important host institutions for CSC fellowship holders in Germany and one of the top CSC partner universities worldwide.
To extend the range of cooperation with the CSC, another agreement was signed in 2013 to promote postdoctoral research. Professors and junior research group leaders at Freie Universität can offer open postdoc positions. The Beijing Office handles the local advertising of the positions in China and will also screen and assess the applications, for both the doctoral and postdoc positions.
Freie Universität’s international network comprises seven liaison offices that support the university’s researchers by providing access to regional expertise and local contacts. The focus of the offices varies according to location.
