Freie Universität’s Liaison Office in Brussels, the capital of the European Union, brings researchers from the university together with representatives of European institutions. The office serves to facilitate exchange between researchers and policy makers.

The objectives of the EU Liaison Office of Freie Universität Berlin in Brussels include informing European policy makers about the latest research findings of the university. The office also serves to make Freie Universität visible in the European Commission and in European organizations, to get researchers from the university involved as experts and consultants in European planning processes, and to mobilize members of the university for proposals and projects in the European Higher Education Area.

The Liaison Office has actively participated in the discussions concerning Horizon 2020, the current European framework program for research and innovation. It is the follow-up program of the 7th EU Research Framework Programme, the world's largest transnational campaign for research funding. As Horizon 2020 was being developed, the liaison office was very engaged in putting greater emphasis on funding for the humanities and social sciences.

Exchange with European Partners

Freie Universität maintains numerous partnerships and collaborations in research and teaching with other European universities. The office in Brussels supports researchers from Freie Universität in identifying new partners as well as in submitting new proposals and implementing EU research projects.

Freie Universität also emphasizes research on Europe and the European Union, which is a major focus of the Otto Suhr Institute for Political Science. The permanent secretariat of the European Language Council is at the Language Center of Freie Universität.

Teaching and Research in the EU

Both undergraduate and graduate students benefit from the university’s extensive networks.

There are several master’s degree programs at Freie Universität that focus specifically on Europe. The university offers excellent services for participants in the Erasmus and Erasmus-Mundus programs.

Several times a year the Brussels office organizes events for researchers and alumni of Freie Universität. Graduates who now work at the EU Commission, with German representatives, or lobby organizations in Brussels or in industry are available as mentors or contact persons for students.

The EU Liaison Office of Freie Universität Berlin in Brussels was set up in 2009. It is headed by Dr. Charlotte Fiala.
