Freie Universität is committed to the principles of sustainable development. The Sustainability and Energy Management Unit was founded in 2015 to initiate and coordinate sustainability-related activities and measures in research, teaching, and campus management. The unit advises the university management and at the same time is a point of contact for members of the university in all sustainability issues.
Freie Universität is a university that provides opportunities for thought processes and projects that can offer answers for global social and ecological issues of the future. This includes research that can contribute to solutions as well as sustainability-oriented courses. It is also about sustainability in management.
Energy Reduction of 25 Percent
How might the operation of a university with more than 33,000 students, 4,100 employees, and approximately 200 institutional buildings be carried out sustainably? This is one of the central questions for the Sustainability and Energy Management Unit at Freie Universität, the unit that handles the management of energy, environment, and waste control at the university.
In addition to energy efficient programs in construction and engineering, the Sustainability and Energy Management Unit also manages an incentive plan that rewards academic departments for employing energy-saving measures. Academic departments have been involved financially since 2007. This has led to substantial energy savings.
