Due to current global challenges like climate change, soil salinity, and the loss or decline of biodiversity in agricultural areas, the developing discipline of plant science will continue to grow in importance. The Dahlem Centre of Plant Sciences (DCPS), one of the Focus Areas at Freie Universität,  uses a wide range of plant science content and methodology to combat environmental challenges.

The center, opened in 2009, brings together previously separate fields of research and provides a platform for the development of new research directions. More than 150 scientists dedicate themselves in 20 different work groups, each centered on one of two main themes: “Diversity and Function” and “Plants and the Environment.”
