The research strategy of Freie Universität is directly based on the strengths of the university’s departments and on the high concentration of excellent partners represented on the Dahlem campus. The university aims to build on its impressive performance in recent years in fields including the humanities, international policy research, area studies, mathematics, veterinary medicine, plant research, and chemistry. Bodies including the Center for Research Strategy, which employs a host of tools to plan and support research activities, help to further strengthen these areas of emphasis.
The specific areas of focus in the university’s research activities are organized within various structures, including excellence clusters, collaborative research centers, and other research centers. The focus areas of Freie Universität on the whole offer academic networks and interdisciplinary platforms where scholars and scientists can keep track of research projects and apply for external funding.
Due to the success of the university’s five current Focus Areas, there are plans to establish further Focus Areas, including in medicine. The forms of cooperation practiced within the FocusAareas are as varied as the partners involved, ranging from joint tenured positions and publications to groups of junior scholars and scientists, doctoral education groups, and international research projects.
