Part-time studies

If you wish to make use of the available teaching and support options as a part-time student, you can request that you be allowed to do so by re-registering on time and stating the reason for which you wish to study part-time and providing the relevant documentation. The amount of the semester fees and contributions does not change if you are a part-time student.
Each semester spent studying part-time is counted as one-half a semester within your subject (Fachsemester) and as a full semester of higher education (Hochschulsemester). There is no entitlement to a specific part-time study curriculum. Please contact the appropriate academic advising team within your department in order to arrange the schedule for your part-time study, if applicable.

Note for students who have already studied part-time:

Please check the semester within your subject (the Fachsemester) that is printed in your semester documents (student ID, certificates of enrollment) for the 2015/2016 winter semester. If the information is not correct or you have any questions, please contact the Student Records and Registration Office.

Prerequisites for requesting part-time study:

Students can request permission to study part-time for the following reasons:

  1. the student is working;
  2. to care for and raise a child up to the age of 10 years;
  3. to care for close relatives who require care within the meaning of the German Act on Long-Term Care Leave (Pflegezeitgesetz);
  4. a disability renders or chronic illness part-time study necessary;
  5. while the student is pregnant;
  6. while the student is serving a term in office for a body of the university, the student body, or the Studentenwerk Berlin student union; or
  7. for other serious reasons

The application form to study part-time along with the appropriate proof must be submitted by post to the Student Records and Registration Office. PhD candidates are requested to submit an additional approval issued by the respective doctoral committee.

How long does part-time study apply?

You can study part-time as long as the reason for your part-time status continues to apply. Please let us know before the re-registration deadline if you wish to continue your studies full-time. A simple letter or e-mail is sufficient for this; no particular form is required.

Things to keep in mind before requesting permission to study part-time

Shifting to part-time studies may have significant effects on benefits you receive from bodies not affiliated with the university, such as BAFöG student aid, child benefits (Kindergeld), health insurance, residential entitlements, tax matters, residence permit, etc.
Please clarify how part-time study will affect these benefits and other matters with the relevant body in each case.

Part-Time status in postgraduate study program:

If the study regulations for a study program, especially a continuing education program, are geared exclusively toward part-time study while students are working or in addition to an activity that takes a comparable amount of time, applicants are automatically enrolled as part-time students for the entire regular program duration. This means it is not necessary to submit a separate request.
