After successfully enrolling or re-registering, students receive a student ID in the mail. This ID contains a bar code for borrowing materials from the library. It is generally sent together with the semester ticket transit pass (Semesterticket). Students also receive a certificate of enrollment, a receipt for fees, and one page of a study book (Studienbuch), which is generally no longer needed except by students enrolled in programs toward the degrees of Diplom and Magister. All students can download and print out additional certificates of enrollment online on their own.
Freie Universität plans to replace the “paper” student ID with a chip card – the “Freie Universität Campus Card” – starting in 2017. The Campus Card will be introduced via a Berlin-wide consortium of six higher education institutions. To learn more about this project, click here.
