Model United Nations for Students of Freie Universität and Refugees in the Welcome to Freie Universität Berlin Program / Application Deadline: April 7, 2016
News from Mar 24, 2016
A Model United Nations conference devoted to the principle of the Responsibility to Protect will be held at Freie Universität on July 14 and 15, 2016. The simulation will give students an opportunity to play the role of Ambassadors in various committees and thus gain impressions of multinational diplomacy. Participation is open to students enrolled in any department as well as to refugees enrolled in the Welcome to Freie Universität Berlin Program. The application deadline is April 7, 2016. The conference language is English.
The students will work in teams and represent current members of the Security Council or invited countries, including Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, and Turkey. During the 2016 spring/summer semester in a weekly seminar at the Department of Law at Freie Universität, the participating students will gain an overview of the topic "responsibility to protect": They will work their way through the fundamentals and case studies from the previous practice of the Security Council. In a simulated special session of the Security Council, they will debate the outstanding issues. Some examples of the issues are: In which cases is the "responsibility to protect" applicable, and what are the appropriate means? Under what circumstances can the Security Council authorize a military intervention? The preparatory seminar will take place on Wednesdays from 4 to 6 p.m. The seminar and the conference will be in English.
Currently the member countries of the Security Council are: Angola, China, Egypt, France, Japan, Malaysia, New Zealand, Russia, Senegal, Spain, Ukraine, United Kingdom, USA, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The invited countries are Iraq, Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan.
